The level of a nutrient in the diet that meets the daily needs of half the people in a typical healthy population. The appropriate use for average requirement (AR) is to estimate the prevalence of inadequacy for groups and probability of inadequacy for individuals. AR is same conecpt as estimated average requirement (EAR) whereas EAR is set by the National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) formerly known as Institute of Medicine (IOM) (for the United States and Canada), and AR is set by EFSA (for Europe).
