Definition
An essential trace element, as it is incorporated into metalloproteins that are integrated into several key enzymes. Manganese metalloproteins have a wide array of functions as cofactors for several enzyme families including oxidoreductases, transferases, and hydrolases, and as such, manganese is one of the most common metals in human tissue.
