Definition
An essential nutrient needed for the maintenance of body fluid volume, acid balance and normal cellular function. There is a relationship between over-consumption of sodium and under-consumption of potassium, both of which are important risk factors for cardiovascular disease and stroke. Recommendations to increase dietary potassium intakes may help to reduce this risk.
